Can I continue working after my opt expires?

My OPT expires on the 2nd of January 2015. I got married and applied for and EAD card back in october ending and I am yet to receive it. tracking the progress online does not tell me if it has been approved or not. but i have done my bio metrics already. I work in an industry where there has been a lot of lay offs due to declining gas prices. Now, i have been told by my supervisor that my job is secure. but i am scared of loosing it because of my OPT status as it would be extra difficult to find another. So, can i keep working after my OPT expires considering i have applied for an EAD card? how do i go about this without having to loose my JOB?

Unfortunately, your employment authorization ends with your OPT/EAD expires. Merely having a new application pending for a new EAD does not grant you authorization to work.

Sorry, but the formula is simple. No work permit IN-HAND ==> not able to work. Even if the very-defective online system said you were approved you still can't work without the plastic card IN-HAND. Sorry.

Yes, you can if your employment authorization document is approved before your OPT expires or if your major is in STEM and you timely apply for STEM extension and get it granted. No, otherwise.
