Motion to reopen and complete step-parent adoption?

Business 6 views 3 answers
Initiated step-parent adoption on 5 children in 2010, completed 3. My now 17 year old daughter wants to complete the adoption before she turns 18 in February (19th) as she wants the birth certificate change that doesn't come with an adult adoption. The case had everything done other than her consent (background checks, parental rights signed off by biological father, etc). Is it possible to motion to reopen and complete this adoption without new documentations and such and to complete before she turns 18? Looking to retain someone to accomplish this if possible.

It is unlikely that a court is going to reopen a case going back to 2010. Beside the case having been sent to archives, they will want current documents and new background checks.

I agree with Ronald. Also, most courts cannot get you in for a hearing in a month. My last adoption case was calendared about four months out. Sorry!

You are going to have to go through a new background check with FBI and CBI. This is going to put you up against the wall in terms of the deadline that you face. The best a competent lawyer will tell you is that he/she will do his best. The late start of this project does not bode well for completion within the deadline. Good luck to you and to your daughter.
