What is present value in todays dollars of a future alimony of $1,500 a month for ten years?

Alimony 2 views 4 answers
I am trying to buy out my wife who wants 1,500 monthly for ten years. And I need to know what the discounted value would be in todays dollars. And I don't know the discount % to plug in the formula.

An actuary can do this, as this is not a legal question.

There are a many different considerations in addition to the discount rate and taxes. Your wife may take less if you give her a lump sum division of asset, rather than taxable alimony. The Internal Revenue Code is very specific in what is considered alimony versus division of assets. You should consult with an accountant or actuary, who will consider the facts and work with you regarding the number.

http://www.pine-grove.com/online-calculators/present-value-annuity-calculator.htm is a pretty nifty calculator $147,825.39 at 4% discount rate. Yes there may be other issues and you need to confer with someon as to the correct discount rate
