Possibility of being tracked down for shoplifting?
Anonymous2 views5 answers
My cousin had a problem with shoplifting several months ago. In late August, he took several hundred dollars worth of merchandise from chain stores but was never approached by security. Now, after the matter, he is afraid that the stores may use his debit card number and possible videos of him to track him down. Is this possible? Is it safe to say that he is now in the clear (4 months later)? If not, what should he do?
Usually these things happen to folk's "friends." Your "cousin" apparently dodged a bullet. Hopefully your "cousin" learned from this and will QUIT STEALING. It's unlikely they will track your "cousin" down after the fact, but I would avoid that store for quite some time. QUIT STEALING.

Most stores loss prevention departments only store video between one to thee months. He can probably stop worrying but that does not mean he is not in the stores watch list. This is a list of customers suspected of theft which is kept by the teller. However, the more time that passes the more likely he may have circulated out. If something does come of it, it would be a good option to contact one of us attorneys at for legal advise.
No one can say for sure. After four months, he will probably not be prosecuted. But you can bet that if he returns to these stores, loss prevention will have an eye on him. I have had clients who claimed they had never ever ever stolen merchandise until they were caught redhanded. But the surveillance video and loss prevention reports quickly established that these same people were being watched from the moment they entered the store, because they had been linked to previous thefts. If your cousin keeps stealing, he will eventually be caught.
