Can a packet be put on hold or can a contract be extended to avoid separation?

I have a relative who is in the Army Reserves. He missed a significant amount of time because of no transportation and living an hour and a half away from his unit. His unit said they have submitted a packet on him to separate him from the army but he doesn't want out. He has been going since with me providing transportation. Is there any way to put a hold on his packet or to extend his contract to make up the missed time?

It will depend greatly on the circumstances, but it does not hurt to have him obtain zealous counsel to advocate on his behalf to the command. Hiring an experienced attorney could go a long way in demonstrating to the command how serious he is in his commitment to serve.

What steps has he taken to negotiate with the command to make up the time or get excused absences? That's something that ought to have been done.
