If someone you know takes your car without permission and wrecks it what can you do?

We left our cars at our parents house while we were all on a cruise and the guy who was coming to feed the animals(friend of brother) took both me and my mothers cars and drove them and ended up wrecking mine. What can we do in a situation like this. He had permission to be at the house but not to drive the cars, he also went rummaging through bedrooms he did not have permission to be in to find the keys. He says he does not have the money to pay for damages which are already estimated at $2500.

If you have collision coverage through your own policy, you can make a claim and pay the deductible, so you can have your car repaired. The insurance company will then pursue reimbursement (called subrogation) against the driver, and if they collect will reimburse your deductible to you. Also, if he has a job, the insurance company will be able to take a part of his paycheck to reimburse the cost of the damages.

In addition to the provided response, I would make a police report. This is criminal conduce and should not go unpunished.

First, you can certainly report him to the police. If you have collision coverage, you can have them repair the car. If you don't, you can file suit against the driver in Small Claims.
