On J1, need a visa for fellowship. J1 or O1?

I am currently on J1 visa which will expire 6/30/15 (6th year on J1). I have secured a 2 year fellowship starting July 2015. Have only 1 year left on J1 and have to apply for J1 extension (8th year). What is the best option? J1 vs O1? Is there anyway to apply for a greencard?

Probably J1 but I agree with my esteemed colleague that talking to the school foreign student adviser is a good idea.
