What does case set for disposition mean?

7 views 3 answers
I was arrested on a misdemeanor charge. I saw a magistrate in jail and applied from jail for a free attorney. I have had no word yet on whether I will get one or not and already my court date is set and I have received a letter saying the case is set for disposition. What do I do now and what is going on? Am I going to be sentenced with no trial or a chance to plead not guilty or guilty?

Do not worry. Disposition just means another court setting. Anytime you have to show up to court this is called a Court Setting/Disposition/ etc. It will be the prosecutor and your defense attorney talking and trying to come to a meeting of the minds. If they cannot agree then the case will be set for trial. (If that is what you want, the client always has final say.)

The term disposition in a criminal case means that you are going to set the case for trial or a plea. Many courts give more than one disposition setting,

I echo Charles on this. Its just another court setting to attend. The court uses these settings to keep tabs on the progress of a case and make sure it continues through the process.
