Caught shoplifting

I was in Walmart yesterday and was approached by two LP agents as i was leaving...i had paid for one item, but did not pay for the $10 bottle of kerosene fluid. I told them i had a receipt, but he refused to look at it and insisted i go with them. I immediately becamr afraid and started walking away towards the exit. They followed and attempted to stand in front of me, but i told them not to touch me and they cant hold me against my will. They demanded their merchandise and i politely sat it down, got in my car and left before they could call the police. I feel awful. I know one of the agents took pictures of me with his cell phone and my tag because they followed me to my car. Will the police come after me for something so small that i left behind?

Because the item was under $25, they may not prosecute as Wal-Mart oftentimes applies the $25 threshold. Suffice it to say, don't go back to Wal-Mart (any) as they may now charge you with trespassing. If you get a letter or summons in the mail, consult counsel.

They might just come and get you and charge you with a crime. If that happens you know you need to get an attorney. On the other hand, they may not come and get you. So, basically you are in a state of suspense, looking over your back, because of what you attempted to do.

Although Walmart is known for being very tough, there are economic considerations. They probably will not pursue this. However, your picture and tag number are probably in a database. If you show up again, you should expect police to show up to escort you out and potential charges for trespassing. David
