If I get a lawyer and my ex doesn't have one what is likely to happen?

I decided to find legal representation for my upcoming custody battle since my ex is trying to change the agreement. They have a history of violence that started with another relationship that they have a child from, child abuse with that child, neglect with our child, and abuse against me during our marriage. I haven't been able to show the judge any of this so I decided to try and get a lawyer. I don't think they have one or have a desire to get one, but if I go to our hearing with one, can they have the judge reschedule or something? Is there anyway to prevent getting yet another continuance as this hearing makes the 4th one after the last 3 have been continued due to my ex continually doing improper paperwork submissions?

You coming to the hearing with a new attorney weighs towards you, not your opposing party, getting a continuance. You seem to want no continuance; so, you should be OK.

Yes, to the degree its been continued this many times and he hasn't obtained counsel-it isn't likely he will be granted a continuance just because you show up with an attorney.
