I am being charged with one count of possession of a forged instrument 2nd degree from a temporary license plate i bought from craigslist my lawyer says im most likely facing a misdemeanor how will this effect me since im 23 and currently in college taking home land security major, my only other charge is a dui from 2013 that i plead down to a violation not a crime in early 2015. what does this mean for my future all of this happened in new york. my current lawyer is from legal aid and im not getting anywhere from my current charge.
Hire a private lawyer. Legal Aid lawyers are only intended to represent people that are truly indigent. If you can hire a lawyer, you should. The legal aid lawyer doesn't care about your case. He or she has 100 other cases and doesn't have time to give each case enough attention. The result is none of the cases are given adequate attention.
If you have no prior criminal history as you describe, you shouldn't be resigned in just taking a misdemeanor conviction. It will follow you forever and will make getting certain types of jobs either very difficult or impossible. There is no expungement in NY so the conviction will never go away. This is a situation with no second chances if its mishandled now.
Did you really think that the Department of Motor Vehicles sells temporary plates on Craig's List? You may have to live with a criminal record for the rest of your life as a result. I would find the funds and hire a private attorney, and not from Craig's List!

How it affects your future depends on what the final outcome of the case is. If you are convicted of a misdemeanor crime, then that conviction stays with you for life and cannot be erased or expunged in the future. It may have to revealed to prospective employers, may prevent you from obtaining certain licenses, and given that fraud is a crime of moral turpitude, may have immigration effects as well. If you're not happy with the progress of your legal aid attorney, hire the attorney of your choosing to represent you.
