What does it mean when the judge sentences 18-24 months of probation instead of just picking 18 or 24?

I was sentenced to 18-24 months probation for a DUI charge. My probation officer is now telling me that because it's 18-24 months, I cannot file for early termination until 18 months, when I've been told you can file when you're 50% through your probation term. Is this accurate?

It means the judge is willing to review probation after eighteen months. You can file for early termination at any time after all other requirements are complete, but the motion is likely to be opposed by both your probation officer and the prosecutor, to whom judges regularly lend their ears.

Many deals include language that limit what you can do regarding early termination (talk to your attorney or an attorney for guidance). If you are able to apply early, and here it would likely only be after 18 months, you are going to need to have your PO on board. If the PO and/or the DA objects there is very little chance for early termination. Good luck.
