Hi, I have a GREEN CARD for the last 15 years. I live in Los Angeles, California. My current GREEN CARD expires in June of this year. A week ago a bought a ticket to my home country (Russia) to go visit my dad, who goes through very important surgery and my presence is absolutely necessary. I will be gone from May 1st till May 18th. Two days ago I managed to lose my GREEN CARD ((( I do not think there is enough time to get a replacement one. What should I do? Will I be able to go to American Embassy in Moscow and get some kind of a document or a stamp into my Russian travel passport so I could be allowed back into US? This would be a preferable scenario for me. I can tell them that I lost my GREEN CARD in Moscow? Or shall I go into local California office and try to figure it out here? My experience in California offices was terrible - appointments, lines, and no guarantee that the business is taking care of on time... Please, advise, thank you very much.
You should file for a replacement green card (Form I-90) and then make an InfoPass appointment with proof of filing of the I-90 and the reason for your urgent travel, and you should get a stamp in your passport to serve as temporary evidence of your permanent residence - it will allow you to travel and return to the U.S.
I agree with my colleagues, you should be eligible to receive a stamp in your passport (instead of having to get a replacement green card at this time). You can do this by making an INFOPASS appointment at your local USCIS office.
Good luck!
1. Get a stamp at infopass
2. Apply for a new green card
3. Hire an attorney and get your citizenship. You've been here for 15 years as a permanent resident and you speak English!
1) File an I-90 immediately and have the receipt notice and hopefully get fingerprinted before you leave the USA. Take I-90 Receipt with you since CBP will want to see that you filed a replacement of green-card on Form I-90.
2) Schedule INFO-PASS with USCIS Local and request temporary I-551 stamp on your passport. Your passport must be VALID. Good luck.
