Good news is that they are all misdemeanors (although I note you said 4 charges and you listed 3). A misdemeanor 484(a) carries up to 6 months in the county jail. VC 10851(a) is a minimum of 90 days maximum of one year. HS 11550(a) is likewise a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of one year. So, he is looking at a minimum of 90 days if he pleads to the stolen car or under the influence of a controlled substance. If he doesn't have prior drug charges he may be eligible for deferred entry of judgement (probation with drug classes) for the under the influence charge. If convicted on all charges the court can impose sentencing on all. He will get day for day time credits so he will only have to actually serve half of whatever time is imposed. And, yes, the time he is racking up now will count against any time the court imposes. Overall, it sounds like your son may have a drug issue. If he is willing to get some in-patient treatment he may be able to do treatment time in lieu of jail time and be better off for it. Retain him an experienced criminal defense attorney and looking into rehab if he is willing to go that route.

He will be well represented by the Public Defender's Office. Probably not looking at too much jail time, but theft offenses are problematic on one's permanent criminal history. This will cause him trouble finding employment in the future.
