Should I hire an attorney for my child support hearing.

I'm just wondering if it's worth it. The mother already has primary custody and pays for our child's health insurance, so would it be worth investing money into hiring an attorney or make much of a difference when it's time for us to appear for establishing an amount.

An attorney can help you determine income and expenses that should be used to calculate child support pursuant to the child support guidelines. I would recommend that you meet with an experienced attorney to make sure the amount is calculated properly.

I agree with Ms. Glencer. I would at least speak with an attorney and run the numbers. If you or the mother owns your own company then it would be wise to not only meet with an attorney, but hire one.

Some of the numbers that go into the calculation of support are subject to interpretation, like what of her child care expenses are legit or only related to work, what is each of your actual income, how much overtime do you really get, is past overtime unlikely to continue or has it stopped already. One of us getting the judge to see just one (or more than one) of these factors your way could save you hundreds of dollars a month for as long as you pay (which is until the kid is 18 normally) so it can often be well worth getting an attorney, including possibly the very talented and smart Mr. Koslow who already responded here

The answer is always yes when dealing with Court, BUT in a slight deviation from the other attorneys who responded, if your income, her income, daycare expenses, number of children, paternity, and health insurance costs for the child's part are CLEAR, and you do not have shared custody, then you could in all fairness, do okay with your case. If there are issues as to actual incomes, hidden incomes, whether you have shared custody under the guidelines are all issues that can be looked at by a lawyer, so you may at least want to consult with one.
