Can my roommate sue me for breaking the lease

Bankruptcy and Debt 2 views 1 answers
More specifically, I'm breaking the lease but have found a suitable tenant to take my place. The landlord is asking that the new person sign a new lease, and also is raising the rent by $50/month. My roommate is demanding that I pay her the $50x3 for the difference because she claims that she has to pay more rent because I broke the lease 3 months before it was due. Does she have any legal ground, especially since I'm upholding my end by finding a suitable replacement?

Dear Bronx Tenant: If your "roommate" is a real roommate, you owe nothing at all to the roommate. The roommate's right to stay in the apartment is up to you and ends when your lease ends. If your "roommate" is a co-tenant, meaning you both signed the same lease with the landlord, then your co-tenant has total power over you and your landlord. The co-tenant has no legal obligation consenting to release you from the lease and to allow a new tenant to come in and take your place.
