On the USCIS website , it is 12 months but I always hear people say 6 months. I have a sick grandfather who needs a company and need to plan ahead

There is no magic number. USCIS can move to take away your green card if at any time they believe you to have abandoned your permanent residence in the U.S. Best to apply for a re-entry permit before you leave to protect your permanent residence status.

Apply for re-entry permit if you wish to stay longer.
