How do I know if my marriage is legal if the marriage license wasn't sent in after the ceremony

I was married in Chicago IL in 1986 and I want to make sure it's legally binding if the marriage license wasn't sent in after the ceremony because I want a divorce from her before I spend any money for a divorce that I don't need.

There is detailed law governing that issue, which occurs with regularity. Generally error in clerical procedure of such sort does not invalidate a marriage. Tricia Dwyer Esq.

Technically, if the marriage certificate wasn't recorded, the marriage doesn't exist. BUT, this is a technicality - a "clerical error," if you will. That can be easily remedied, esp. since you've obviously holding yourself out as married for nearly 30 years.
