You don't understand the meaning of "pro bono." “Pro Bono” is shorthand for pro bono publico, a Latin phrase meaning “for the public good.” The key word is “public.” For a lawyer, it means taking on a case that has greater impact on more people than just your client. The civil rights cases of the 1960’s - such as Loving v. Virginia challenging bans on interracial marriage - are good examples of cases that have a broad impact on the public at large rather than just on the litigants.
People seeking free legal representation use “pro bono” to just mean “free.” But attorneys aren’t interested in doing free work any more than carpenters or plumbers or auto mechanics. Would you ask a carpenter to build you a house “pro bono”? Would you ask a plumber to clean out your clogged toilets “pro bono”? Do you run around spending days or weeks doing “pro bono” work for strangers? Then why would anyone expect attorneys to do so?
My employees don’t work “pro bono” for me. They expect to get paid. How can I pay my employees if my customers don’t pay me?
