Could my daughter get in legal trouble for putting lemon slices on someone's car windshield as a gag?

If my daughter were to cut up multiple lemons into slices, and then place and arrange the lemons onto someone's car windshield, being careful not to get them on any painted surfaces, as this could damage the vehicle, could she be charged with any crimes if caught? What penalties could these crimes carry, and what factors would affect them? I know her and her friend were joking around with the idea just as a joke, but I want to make sure that there isn't any legal risk assuming they don't do any damage to the car. -Matt

Had this occurred 25 years ago, I would say don't worry about it. However, at the present time, this could be constued as vandalism/ destruction of someone else's property. People react to practical jokes in a very different way. Consider not doing the joke. If it has to occur, buy fake, paper lemons and use them.

I would suggest just making it clear to your daughter not to do it. Your daughter, by placing lemons on another individual's property, could potentially cause damage. In such case, she would be vandalizing and/or causing destruction to another's property, as Mr. Tackett pointed out.
