He needs to hire a lawyer ASAP. He needs to NOT make any statements to the police or anyone else. If he can't afford a lawyer, he will get a public defender.

Call around to some local attorneys for ideas given the facts. I practice in FL and there is no charge of simply riding in a stolen car. The State would have to show some involvement in the theft or covering up of the theft. Not sure how CA law reads. So, best to make some calls for now and get some information. Consultations are usually free. Hopefully, no one made an incriminating statements.

Your husband needs to do to very important things at this point: (1) Not make ANY statements to the police or anybody else, and (2) retain an experienced criminal defense attorney who practices in San Diego County where I've practiced for the past 20 years. It sounds like he has a defensible case. Has he been to court yet? Is there a court date pending?? What about his brother, I trust he was arrested as well?

.com is a great place to start to compare/contrast quality, locally experienced, criminal defense attorneys. Call a few and see what they would charge your husband given the situation and hire the best one you/he can afford.

It's very important that your husband not make any statements about his case to law enforcement because anything he says can and will be used against him in court. You should research various criminal defense attorneys who practice in San Diego and schedule free legal consultations. You can explain your financial situation and hopefully, the attorney can work something out with you and/or your husband.
