The reason people are urged to frequently check their credit is because the Fair Credit Reporting Act at link below requires you to contact the credit bureaus to dispute any errors. Unfortunately, errors happen all the time, but the dispute process is pretty easy. Impossible to speculate as to why this happened to you - possibly someone with a similar name or social security filed bankruptcy and a clerk attached this information to you. Hope this perspective helps!

Anything could have happened. You could, possibly, be the victim of identity theft and identity fraud, with someone going so far as to filing bankruptcy while using your ID. That might sound crazy, but it happens. It happened to my brother-in-law. So you'll just have to investigate, and then contact the credit reporting agencies.

Good news: The Fair Credit Reporting Act protects consumers like you in these situations. Under that statute, the credit bureaus are required to assure the "maximum possible accuracy" of the information they report about you. Bad news: inaccurate information on credit reports is a widespread problem. More good news: if you have suffered any financial disruption or other issues with your credit report because of this, you promptly should contact an attorney experienced in handling claims against credit bureaus for negative inaccurate information. In many cases, you need not pay the attorney -- the attorney gets paid by the credit bureau that violated your rights if you win the case.
