On my credit report that I have to turn in with the packet it lists the original creditor and most of the account number. Do i need the whole account number? and is listing the original creditor good enough or must I find out the current debt buyer or collection agency holding it?

Personally, I don't give clients worksheets, as I prefer to interview them and obtain credit reports. I then ask them to add any missing debts, but usually, the credit report covers most. Medical providers and other professionals may not appear, along with loans from individuals and relatives. I would suggest that you have your lawyer get a credit report first and have you fill in the holes, if any. There is no requirement in the code for the whole account number. Generally creditors get notices with your SSN on it, which is enough to allow then to ID the account. If you do know the current owner of the account (debt buyer) by all means list it. You may not. On the other hand, this info is usually on the credit report anyway. The same goes for the collector. In short, just do your best to list all the creditors with the info you have and go over it with your attorney.

No. If you do not know who owns it and the only creditor(s) listed are those in your credit report, that's good enough. If you do know, then make sure to let your lawyer know that its a duplicate entry for whichever creditor that was the original one and sold it, if that is also the case. You do not have to list the whole account number. Only the last 4 digits of the account.

I agree with Attorneys Rubin and Elie. You are required to make your best efforts to list all creditors. If the only information you have regarding a debt is the original creditor, then listing that name and address would be fine. The last four or first four digits of the account # would suffice; depending upon whether we are listing the first or last 4 digits, we usually reference "XXXX1234" or "1234XXXX". In the event you are attempting to file the bankruptcy petition pro se, I suggest that you reconsider. Good luck.

Obtain a copy of your credit report and review with your attorney. You do not need the whole account number.
