Is it ever too late in a case to hire a different attorney?

I do not feel that mine is doing the job as he has failed to inform me of court dates he has changed on his own, or discuss the evidence in detail and give me an understanding of the case as a whole.

You can choose another attorney most of the time, but acting quickly would be very important. They would need time to review your case and prepare. However, if you are currently in trial, the judge may not allow a continuance. Consult with an attorney right away to explain your situation.

No. Unless, of course, the Judge won't grant a continuance request for a new attorney to adequately prepare.

Probably not, but if you are considering this you should do it swiftly. Criminal cases take a long time for any .attorney to formulate proper defenses and basically just think about the case. Your attorney will most likely review the entire matter with you personally.

I'd say you probably can't hire a new one in the middle of trial. Otherwise you can hire at any time. Keep in mind the attorney needs time to prepare. The court may not give time. So you may pay a premium to ask an attorney to prepare on short notice.
