This event has caused us to loose our home, forced into bankruptcy, and only received minimal income during recovery. Should the business owner be responsible in some way? Isn't this why business's carry insurance?

It is unlikely that this is an insurable event. However, Mr. Bain is quite right in stating you need to reach out to a local lawyer immediately or you may well be barred from bringing any claim due to the statute of limitations. Good luck
