green cards of these nature expire now, but, there is no expiration date on it. When contacting USCIS they have told me the residency is valid but the card needs to be renewed. I am trying to prove legal residency for social security disability benefits

As long as you haven't abandoned your permanent residence status in the U.S. by staying outside the U.S. for too long, you would still be a permanent resident. The card needs to be renewed for identification purposes, but your status itself does not expire.

You are still a permanent resident unless you lost your permanent resident status at some point. If you haven't been in deportation or removal proceedings in Immigration Court or haven't abandoned your status by staying outside the US for a long period of time you are most likely a permanent resident. You can apply to get a new green card or apply for naturalization. If you have ever - at any time - been arrested, charged with a crime, or convicted you should speak to an experienced immigration lawyer before making any application to USCIS.

The existence of a resident card indicates that you may be a resident. However, if you have resided abroad for an extended period of time , you may have abandoned your resident status. You should visit with a qualified and experienced immigration attorney to analyze your case. Good luck to you.

If you are still living here, and haven't spent too long abroad at any one time in your life, or any criminal issues, you might want to consider finally becoming a citizen. Or did your parents become citizens before you were 18? Maybe you are one, just don't know it. Time to get some advice.
