How can I get my ex's parental rights terminated?

I separated from my ex when my daughter was 4 months. She twelve in a couple months. He has never done anything for her or even seen her since he left. I refuse to file child support because he has a long criminal record and has been to prison at least twice that I know of and don't want to expose her to that lifestyle.

On one hand, you can try to terminate; it's not guaranteed to work but you would have to prove to a court why the court should terminate. Keep in mind that he would be given notice and opportunity to respond. It's possible that he could try to get custody or visitation in that scenario. On the other hand, what happens if you don't do anything?
