If a police report was taken and no charges filed, will this show up on my record that a police report was even taken?

My step daughter came to my house recently and started an argument with me. She called the police on me. She claims I hit her and her daughter who were subsequently hitting me. The witnesses at the the gathering said she is lying and I did not hit her. Actually, the witnesses said that I should be filing charges against her as she came into my home and started an argument and was striking me. I'm not going to do that, however, what happens next? No one was arrested, however, I'm worried about my record.

If a police report was taken, and all that you said here was included in the report, especially the "witnesses" you mentioned telling officers that the situation was the opposite of what your step-daughter said, that is probably why charges have not been filed. If such a case was to go to a prosecutor, and based on all the information they had they did not believe a crime was committed by you, then they would not file charges against you. However, you should be extra careful because if this type of event becomes a pattern, then someone is going to get in trouble somehow. Best to find a way to keep your distance and relationship smooth. As for your record, there is no criminal record until charges are filed. There is not a criminal conviction until found guilty or from pleading guilty. As for the police, they may keep incident reports or more formal reports. You might want to get a copy of that from the police so that you know what they recorded. The prosecutor has a year to file charges. If you formally complain against your step daughter as others are recommending, you could trigger her to fight back in some manner, whether criminal or civil. Best to do everything in your power to keep the peace and avoid confrontation.

It will probably not show up on your rap sheet but it ma be kept in police department records in case they are called again.

Nobody was arrested and you weren't even issued a citation to appear in court? There's nothing on your record. The police department probably has a "record" of the event, but nobody would ever know about it but them. What exactly are you worried about?
