Can an employer demand full reimbursement of Green Card fees if I leave within a year? Does an est. cost of $20K feel right?

I am currently on an expiring H1B (citizen of Canada) - my employer has offered to sponsor my GC but has asked that if I am to leave withing a year of receiving the GC, I will need to reimburse the firm within 30 days of my termination. I have read that this practice is not legal but would like confirmation. Also, if you could tell me if an 18-22K estimate for all fees sounds reasonable, that would be great. Thank you!

This would depend on the exact language of any employment contract you may have signed. 18-22K in attorney's fees sounds high, even for New York City.

Reimbursement for what? For filing Green Card petitions? I do not think this practice is legal also. In addition, 18-22K seems way, way too much money.

I agree with my colleagues that this seems like an exorbitantly high figure for securing a green card. You should ask for a itemized breakdown of fees to review how they arrived at this figure.
