How much rent to charge an SSI recipient?

Business 2 views 3 answers
My relative on SSI will live with me, but she cannot pay half the rent which would amount to more than she receives each month. Is there a way to avoid her SSI amount from being reduced? She is on food stamps and will continue to prepare separate meals.

You need to charge full market value for rent and utilities. Subsidized rent can be considered in kind support and maintenance and reduce SSI benefits.

Mr. Pham is correct. If you charge less than the fair market value you are, in essence, giving your relative money. This will in turn reduce the SSI benefit.
