Your insurance carrier may be talking to plaintiff (claimant) or their attorney in an attempt to settle this matter. If you have been served with papers to start a suit, the insurance company has a duty to defend and should assign counsel. Do not talk with anyone other than your insurance carrier and counsel that they may assign.
Your insurance company is required to retain counsel for you if you are served with a complaint by the injured party. You are calling yourself the defendant but did not mention if you were served with a summons and complaint. If so, this needed to be immediately sent to the adjustor so counsel can be retained for you. If you have not been served then merely keep in touch with the adjustor for your policy of insurance to make certain you fully understand how this is going to be resolved. If your adjustor cannot resolve this claim then the other person will generally use counsel to file a summons and complaint and you become served. If such is served upon you get it to the adjustor. Good luck
If you do get sued, and you tell your insurance company about it right away, your insurance company has to defend you. That's what insurance is for. But you don't need a lawyer to defend you until you have been sued. The insurance company should be trying to settle the claim before you get sued, and you will not need a lawyer while that is happening.
