I am currently in my 3rd year of H1b cap-exempt visa and my non profit org has also filed for green card (waiting for I140). However I want to switch to a for profit company and since 2016 h1b cap is already filled, was wondering whats the earliest way to shift to a for profit before Oct'16.

Since you now hold a cap exempt H-1B, you can not obtain a cap subject H-1B until at least October 1, 2016 if the FORM I-129H on your behalf is selected and approved by USCIS next year. You can explore the possibility of a J-1 if you can not wait until then.

An H1B visa is job specific so you would not be able to use your current visa.
