I have an open warrant, what can I do to avoid being arrested
Anonymous5 views4 answers
I have an open warrant for a speeding ticket I got back in December 2013. I had forgotten all about it and will call the court office on Tuesday since they are closed on Memorial Day. I have not attended any hearing and have not pleaded my case. Will I be arrested if I call or go to the courthouse to set up a hearing? I'm currently unemployed. Since I can't afford a lawyer, I would appreciate it if anyone could give me detailed information.
You will be required to post a bond. If you post a cash bond, then that money can later be used to apply to any fines / fees. You will likely have two warrants - one for the original case and the second for failure to appear in court.
You can also ask to do community service in lieu or in partial settlement of fees / fines. Be prepared to demonstrate that you are indigent and you must be trying daily to get a job.

There isn't a whole lot that anyone can do for you. The city wants either their money or you in jail. Our advice would be to pay the ticket or hire a lawyer, which takes money which you don't have. You avoid getting arrested like everyone else. Go able your daily routine like nothing is wrong. That's it. We can not legally tell you to hide. We cannot tell you to go to Mexico. We can't do anything other than take care of it. I doubt very seriously that anyone is looking for you very hard. Nobody really cares about you that much. Don't you think that there is enough crime in Laredo to keep the cops busy without looking for you? BUT, if a cop stops you or asks you your name, you'd better just fess up and tell him. Lying or running will get you REAL problems.
You are most likely going to have to post a bond and will eventually need an attorney. Hiring an attorney that can get your bond paperwork together and "walk" you through the bond process to minimize the amount of time you will be in custody is your best option.
