If he did enter the U.S. lawfully and has overstayed, you can sponsor him for a green card, and he can adjust status in the U.S., after you get married and assuming there is nothing in his background that would preclude him from becoming a permanent resident. Best to consult with an immigration attorney who can analyze the entire situation to confirm his eligibility

You should be able to get things worked out ... with the help of an attorney. Many of us provide low-cost guidance via Skype.

A US Citizen spouse can petition for a legally-entered person who overstayed the visa. This is the only category where this would be true in the I-130 categories. You should retain a good attorney for his case who can produce evidence of this being a bona fide marriage and not for the purposes of evading immigration benefits.

If he entered lawfully, assuming no other issues with his application, once married he will be eligable to adjust his status to that of a lawful permenant resident based on being the spouse of a US Citizen. Documentation that you will need to file, including supporting documentation, will include, but is not limited to form I130 and I485. I also agree with my esteemed collegue, Mr Brollesy, that it would be wise to consult with an immigration attorney before filing anything for a full assessment of eligibility. good luck.
