Do I need an attorney to get off probation when on an Interstate Compact?

In 2011 I was sentenced to 10 years probation with one year in prison. I was sentenced under the First Offender Act and was told I had to complete a third of my sentence and pay off my Restitution. When I was released from prison, I moved back to MD with an interstate compact and began supervision there. As of April '15, the restitution is paid. I was eligible for early termination at the end of April. I called the C.S.O for the judge who sentenced me and she had since resigned. I was told by my old lawyer I need to petition the court, but being in MD, that's complicated since I'm a full-time student and work full time. Can a lawyer petition the courts for me or do I need to spend the time and money to petition the courts myself?

It is in your interest to hire an attorney to handle this for you so the petition is done correctly. Best of luck.

Yes, a lawyer can file a motion to terminate your probation. However, since the Judge who took over for Judge Becker is new to the bench, I would wait a few months so he can settle in first. Also, if you were my client I would want you to appear for the hearing.

You need to hire a local (Georgia) attorney to petition for you. make sure you hire a criminal defense attorney who has handled these matters before.
