Driving a rental car without insurance in California and involved in a minor accident (scratch).

2 views 3 answers
I rented a car and I only bought lost and damage waive via car rental company. At that time, I'm not aware of that I didn't purchase insurance with this rental car. I was involved in an car accident (scratch) in parking lot although it's not my responsibility. But the opposite side will claim I hit his car. Driving without insurance in California is not legal and I'm not aware that I didn't purchase the insurance by the time I checkout. What could I do? Will I face losing my license and server penalty? Anything I can do to reduce my lost?

California Law requires that accidents that cause property damage or bodily injury for $750 or more be reported to the DMV. Hopefully the damage you caused is less than $750. Either way, contact the opposite side and try to settle. If a settlement is reached, make sure the opposite side signs a release of claims before you give them any money. If you have insurance on your personal vehicle, that should be available for this loss. If you do not or you have a high deductible, you should contact the owner of the other vehicle and agree to pay for the damage.
