I went on a date with a guy who was really pushy, and I blew him off afterwards. He wants to sue me for the bill.

He continued to text me (a lot) and sent me some provocative photos. I did not respond to any. His last text: So much for a good communicator. How dare you to disrespect me. You're a spineless coward and you owe me money for dinner. Anything other than $50.00 paid to me by the end of this week will result in a small claims judgement filed against you. You will also be responsible for the filing fee and lost wages on my part, equal to $50+ an hour. [insert mean things] He then provided an address to send check and finished: I have no mercy for my enemies and will sue you. I've taken ex friends, business partners, and others to court and will fight it until I win as I have with others. I know your address and will file next week if payment isn't received. Does he have a case?

Yikes. As we always say, you can be sued by anyone for anything. This threat goes to that point. That said, just because someone can sue you does not mean they have a chance of winning. I would be stunned if any judge anywhere would ever award this (absent copious lies that, for some inexplicable reason, the judge bought). That said, do you really want to spend the money and the time to defend this? That will cost you about as much as paying his idiotic demand. Granted, I understand not wanting to give in to this kind of pathetic person, but only you can decide if you actually want to deal with this person further. If you want to send your text, go ahead. You should then remove and block this person from all forms of communication. Whether you want to end this now or believe his threat and deal with that is something only you can decide. Good luck.

I think your first instinct is correct. Block him. Ignore him. Many people say they are going to sue, many fewer actually follow through. I can't see any judge taking such a claim seriously. If he actually serves you with court papers you will have to file a response, but he has to be very delusional to think that his story will play well in front of any judge. Ask him to stop contacting you. Call the police if he persists.

My colleagues are correct in noting that anyone can file court papers for any reason, and the real question is whether the suit will be victorious. Like my colleagues, I have substantial doubt about the validity of this kind of suit. Ignoring a date after he bought you dinner does not establish legal liability to pay for the dinner. Perhaps if you intended to disregard him while tricking him to pay for dinner, then perhaps there could be a legal basis for a claim against you. Of course, these are just off the cuff observations. In order to get meaningful legal advice, you need to hire an attorney. I am much more concerned about this guy's attitude and tone. Please keep copies of all text messages, email, or letters etc. He is being threatening, and acting out of narcissism or a sense of entitlement. These can be dangerous attitudes. If his treats persist, please go to your local police station and file a report. While the police likely will not be able to take substantial action until the situation escalates, making a report will help establish an evidentiary record to enable action later on.
