Should I apply for citizenship before or after marriage?
Anonymous2 views3 answers
I am an immigrant living in the US with a working visa. I am 19 years old and I have been with my boyfriend for a year and we are planning on getting married soon, probably within the next year. He is serving in the US Navy and has been for almost 2 years. He brought up the fact of wanting to get my citizenship before my work visa expires. I've heard that it would be best to apply for citizenship before getting married because then they think after marriage it's used for wrong intentions. I'm not sure if it's true or not but I'd like more information if possible
It will not necessarily be assumed that you got married just for legal permanent resident status if you wait until you are married. In fact, you probably aren't eligible for citizenship until after you are married. If you are in a genuine relationship, you probably have evidence to support your bona fide marriage. Further, some law firms do "low bono" (read: cheap) services for enlisted servicemembers (if that is the case). Schedule a free consultation and discuss your options.

It is not clear on what basis you will seek citizenship. You must first become a lawful permanent residence before you can seek citizenship. There are limited avenues through which to become a lawful permanent resident; aliens typically become lawful permanent residents through employment or family-based petition. It will not be presumed you and your boyfriend married for the wrong intentions. I would encourage you and your boyfriend schedule a consultation with an experienced immigration attorney to review your options.
