Consumer fraud threats for an old business based in California.

Ran an internet business, i have an ex employee which has records of some wrong doings.. True, there was some consumer fraud done. I've since sold the business. She is threatening to start releasing old files, excel files and internal messages. This happened 10 years ago. Can myself or my old business be in trouble? over $300k non reported and taken from consumers. I'm asking for a friend

Almost all statutes of limitations have probably expired. If the ex-employee says pay me money or I will release the documents, get it in writing and turn her into the police for extortion. Your last sentence does not get you sympathy.

Tell your "friend" that it is probably too late to get in legal trouble now for his misdeeds 10 years ago. Assuming murder wasn't involved.

The federal statute of limitations on criminal tax evasion is 6 years which begins on the date the return should have been filed. If the returns that were filed were fraudulent (falsified, etc.) the statute of limitations does not apply. In CA, the statute of limitations for not filing is 8 years; there is no statute of limitations in CA for fraudulent returns or fraudulent tax shenanigans.

;) ;) I gotcha. Ten years is very likely beyond the statute of limitations. Before spending any further time on the Internet, you could benefit from meeting with an attorney to discuss specific facts in an attorney-client privilege environment, which the Internet is not. Even if you decide not to hire the attorney the consultation with him or her could help you to understand the issues and your options. Many reputable attorneys offer a free consultation. I wish you the best.
