It is normal for a lawyer to recommend that you see a physician that can document and treat your injuries. Many times, when an individual is injured due to a motor vehicle accident, they sustain nerve damage. Nerve damage can be diagnosed and treated by a neurologist. I am sure that when you spoke to your attorney, you listed your current aches, pains and complaints. Personal injury attorneys are very familiar withe the "usual" injuries associated with car accidents and can many times, based on their client's complaints, figure out what type of doctor should take a look at their client. Are you now suffering from headaches? Do you have pain about your neck or lower back area that radiates down to your arms and/or legs? - (Signs of nerve damage) In Florida, most people have $10,000 worth of no fault PIP coverage that would cover your medical treatment related to the motor vehicle accident. Those benefits are limited. Attorneys and clients are pressed to diagnose what specific condition the client has before they exhaust the $10,000 of PIP coverage. Now, you have the choice of seeing a neurologist of your choice. Unfortunately, most doctors when they are informed that the injuries are a result of a motor vehicle accident, will not agree to treat you. It is likely that your attorney is recommending a physician that he has used in the past and will be fine with treating a victim of a motor vehicle accident. I wish you the best of luck.

You do not mention the type of injuries you received. I will assume that based upon the conversation you had with your attorney, s/he felt that a neurologist would be the type of specialist you would need to present to for evaluation of your complaints. I wish you good luck.

I agree with my colleagues and suggest that you directly ask your attorney what is his/her basis for asking you to consult with a Neurologist. That is the only way to know what your attorney is thinking so you can decide if it is a reasonable request.

If you are having any neurological symptoms (such as numbness, tingling or if you sustained a head injury or injury to spine), seeing a neurologist would certainly be appropriate. Did you ask your lawyer why he wants you to see neurologist?

It is not uncommon. Usually your treating orthopedic or internist will recommend you see a nuero based upon certain symptoms. If the lawyer has a doctor to recommend it may be because that doctor has shown a willingness to cooperate with detailed reports that are valuable in presentation to the insurer. As long as the physician is board certified and has a good reputation you should be ok with the recommendation. If the doctor does not satisfy your inquiry you can always obtain a second opinion from another.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It all depends upon the type of injuries and symptoms that you are having. I would need to know more details of the symptoms and problems you are having to tell you if I believe the referral was appropriate. It's possible that an orthopedic, an osteopath, or a chiropractor maybe more appropriate for your treatment, depending upon your situation. I hope this is helpful.

It is not uncommon for an attorney to recommend that their client see if a specialist if the injuries/diagnostic studies warrant same. Should your case go into litigation, the other attorney will likely hire their own expert and it would necessary that you have a doctor with similar expertise comment on your current condition.

Head injury or neurological complaints would justify it.

If you are having symptoms which would normally be treated or evaluated by a neurologist, this is a prudent move. You need to determine the extent of your damages.

Usually a treating physician will refer you to a neurologist. However, if you report symptoms such as pain radiating into your arms or legs and/or excruciating migraine-like headaches, an educated and experienced personal injury lawyer may recommend you treat with a neurologist or neurosurgeon. The severity of your symptoms may require treatment with one of these medical professionals.

If you suffered a head or neck injury as a result of your accident, it may be in your interest to get an opinion from a neurologist as to the severity of your injuries and your treatment options. Discuss your questions and concerns with your attorney as he or she is the only one who can advise you why he wants you to be seen.

Yes. Also, it is best to ask your attorney directly when he suggests such things to you. It will be a long and ongoing relationship and you need to open up and communicate with your present attorney for it to be a good result. If you aren't sure....ask him...right away. You should not need to ask an on line attorney service when you have your own PI attorney. Communication is the key. I hope you feel well again soon and sorry you were injured. Good luck.

First, I have not read all of the other posts, however, to answer fully, there are more facts needed. Personal Injury attorneys frequently work with doctors who will stand by their opinion in court. I have recommended that my clients go to certain doctors in the past, but only after there was a prescription to go to a specialist in that field. There are certain doctors that do not like to get involved in litigation, and those are doctors your attorney may want you to avoid. Hope this helps.

I do not see any downside in following your lawyer's advice. He thinks you need the care of this specialist and he probably is familiar with this doctor and knows he can do a good job in court or in writing reports that are beneficial to your case.
