What does a state lien mean for an out of state title?

Tax Lien 7 views 1 answers
I acquired a travel trailer a year ago from an out of state dealer. So the title that is in my name is from the state of Ohio. Very recently I received a letter from the KY Dept of Revenue that a state lien was placed in my name with the appropriate county clerk's office. I am guessing this "debt" that the DOR is trying to get me on is from an old college bill. I am looking to sell my travel trailer in the next week or so. So my question is really about whether or not I will have any issues with transferring it to a buyer without any interference from a ridiculous state lien. And if there are issues, can I just file Chapter 7 to take care of it?

Not enough information. The first thing you need to do is simply to call the Department of Revenue (there really are nice people that work there) and ask them exactly what it is, and how much, they are attempting to collect. You may also be able to obtain an answer from your county clerk. If the title is still from Ohio, it could be that Kentucky is claiming taxes and penalties on your failure to transfer the title to Kentucky, which you will likely have to do before you transfer it anyway. Depending upon the true nature of the debt underlying the lien, you may or may not be able to discharge it in bankruptcy.
