If I want to travel after October 1st, is the I-94 from my I-797A sufficient to get back into the US (along with my passport)?

Once you depart the US, to be readmitted, this time on H-1B status, you will need a valid H-1B visa "stamp" applied for and obtained from your home country US consulate. You are required to ideally have a passport which will be valid for 6 months beyond the H-1B visa duration.

The first time you leave the U.S. after getting the H approval, you will need an H-1B visa to return. for most countries this would be a multiple-entry visa valid for the duration of the Petition provided your passport has sufficient time left on it.

Unless you are a Canadian citizen, you need a valid H-1B visa stamp, from a U.S. Consulate, in your passport in order to return to the U.S. You should direct any questions to your employer's immigration counsel.
