I'm getting married in El Salvador and was wondering what it would take to bring my wife and her child to the states?

My wife has custody of her child and the father is ok with us bringing their daughter to live with us. Aside from the marriage license, will we need anything else to make the process a lot smoother and quicker?

In addition to the petitiong process with CIS and the NVC and consular processing it is best to get a notarized statement from the father authorizing permanent relocation to the U.S. You also need separate cases for Mom and child if you are a IS citizen and proof you have a relationship with the child who must be under 18.

You start by filing an I-130 pettion for each one of the intending immigrants. I would suggest to check local laws in order to make sure that you will not encounter any problems in bringing your son in law to the United States.

If you get married in El Salvador, you can consider a K-3 visa for your spouse and her son (with father official approval) but you will want to use an attorney because the timing is critical, and if certain documents aren't received in the right order you will end up pursuing an immigrant visa with a 6 month processing time. Your wife will have to wait outside the country for either visa. The alternative is that you can get a K-1 fiancee visa and get married in the United States.
