MN revoked my license for 1 year and SD for 30 days. Now MN says I have to pay a reinstatement fee and give them a resident release form. What does the resident release form mean? Does doing this get me a my SD license or do I still have to wait the year? Can I ever get a MN drivers license?

I am not licensed in Minnesota or South Dakota, so out of respect to any experienced DUI attorney licensed in either state that answers, I would tell you to read that answer first. However, my experience is that a resident release form does not allow you to get a SD license. That is up to SD (not MN). You probably will still need to wait a year to get your SD license. You will be able to get a MN license once you comply with MN's conditions. Good luck to you.

To obtain valid driving privileges in MN after an alcohol revocation a person must 1) pay the $680 alcohol reinstatement fee, 2) serve the duration of the revocation period, and 3) pass the DWI written test OR file a resident release form if not a MN resident and the DWI written test requirement will be waived. Hopefully this answers the MN part of your question. For your SD questions you can try contacting an attorney in SD here on by selecting the "Find a Lawyer" tab at the top of the page. Good luck.

If South Dakota only suspended your license for 30 days, you shouldn't have to wait for a full year for a reinstatement of your SD license. If you are a South Dakota resident with a South Dakota drivers license, you should contact the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. They will be able to tell you when you are eligible for reinstatement and what you must do for them to reinstate your license. Under the circumstances, Minnesota may not honor your South Dakota drivers' license during the period of your suspension, though.
