I rent a farmhouse that's infested with 500 +/- bats that died within the walls. The landlord won't remediate the problem. HELP!

My wife, son and I work for my uncle on a farm he owns. We rent a farmhouse from him that's on the property. VERY LARGE bats have gotten into the rafters, walls, etc. My uncle "called a guy" who sealed IN the bats and now some 500 bats are DEAD within my walls. Urine, guano and dead bat smells permeate everything. The county has declared the house a health hazard. We called the insurance company and they don't cover bat infestation (bats are not vermin or pests). We have an estimate to remediate the damage for $55,000 but my uncle REFUSES to pay it. Instead he wants to hire a team of untrained Mexicans to replace drywall. MY QUESTION: Can my uncle be FORCED legally to properly remediate the problem. It's UNBEARABLE and UNLIVABLE!

Bats carry health hazards and yes, the law provides that the landlord must remedy this problem and/or let you out of the lease (assuming there is a lease since you are renting from a relative). You will need to contact an attorney that handles landlord/tenant issues to assist you with this problem. You can use the "Find a Lawyer" tool located at the top of this website to find an attorney to assist you - most will do a free consultation.
