Landlord Tenant Issues In Chicago
Anonymous2 views3 answers
I have joined the Illinois Tenant Union and they instructed me that I qualify for a 3 month program became my landlord violated the lease and security deposit laws of rlto today my landlord emailed me a 5 day, 30 day notice and is threatening to evict me. Can he evict me?
I do not know what a "3 month program" is and I do not believe it is a concept in Chicago landlord-tenant law. I also do not know if the tenant union provides legal advice, you should probably ask them about that.
Not paying rent is very risky and you should never take such action without proper advice from a lawyer you hire. If you do not pay your rent, most landlords will evict you. If an eviction is filed, you may have a legal defense, but most defenses require proper notice and time to cure.
A five day notice sent to you by Email is not effective, but you should assume that a properly served notice will eventually be made. Whether the landlord can succeed once the case is properly in court will depend on several factors and you did not provide sufficient information. If you can't afford an attorney, there are several agencies which could help you, including Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. Speak to them and get help.
