What are my other legal options to deposit a refund check?

(I'll try and make this as less complicated as it is.) I have a security deposit refund check issued out to me and my ex-boyfriend. I understand that I cannot deposit the check without him being present. Problem is, he is in the military, stationed in the east coast, and is not coming back to the west coast (where I am) anytime soon. Property management says they can reissue me a check if he writes a notarized letter saying he forfeits his share to me. But our 180 days to deposit the check is almost up. What are my other options to legally deposit this check before time runs out?
