If I want to file for a spousal support amendment due to illness will cohabiting with someone effect that?

When we got divorced I had a full time career, shortly thereafter I was diagnosed with a genetic disease and had to quit that job. I have since not been able to keep a job longer than six months and lost my healthcare coverage. I live with my boyfriend, but he only makes about half of what I was making. I want to get my support modified so I don't have to worry about my income. My ex makes over 6 figures. Will living with someone effect the Alimony Modification petition? I was married 20 years. Thank you.

It depends on the language of the divorce decree, and what it says about cohabitation-remarriage, as far as alimony would continue to exist. It is advisable to speak with the attorney that handled the divorce for you. Best wishes.

Your starting point will be your divorce decree. Sometimes, the courts waive jurisdiction to revisit spousal support and child support. If the court still has jurisdiction, then your next obstacle will be the length of time between the termination of your marriage and your efforts at getting spousal support. Your boyfriend's income may come into play in all this. You're going to need competent counsel to look at the divorce decree and come up with the best course of action.
