Can a person apply for an extension of a tourist visa for a second time (making the total length of stay to be 18 months)?

My mother-in-law came to the US with a tourist visa good for 6 month. She applied and was granted for an extension of her tourist status for an additional 6 month. My wife and I have asked her to stay another 6 month to help with our new born. I was wondering if she can request for another 6 month extension making her total length of stay in the US to be 18 months.

No, the CIS California Service Center will never grant a second extension of 6 additional months, unless for verifiable & credible medical treatment. It's already a miracle CSC granted her one extension. Don't push your luck and never mention "child care" for that is the surest way of getting denied..

NO ... DON'T DO IT. A 'granny nanny' is forbidden 'work' under the tourist visa. The law says that if you need child care help, you are supposed to hire a US worker. Plus, the maximum she can stay in the US is 12 months ... send her home and have her come back to VISIT fir the child's first birthday, so.

It's hard enough to get an extension the first time. A second extension is out of the question. Basically you are trying to use your mother in law for free labor. I'm sure USCIS will be thrilled to find that out. Time to hire a babysitter or utilize this thing called FMLA.
