How long you are able to stay is entirely dependent on who purchases the house at sheriff's sale, whether it is a third party or the lender. You have ten days after the sale is completed to "redeem" the property, either by paying the full balance owed, declaring bankruptcy (which halts the tendering of the sheriff's deed), or some other action. After that period has expired, the successful purchaser will have to file an action in ejectment to have you removed from the premises, analogous to an eviction in tenancy. However, I cannot give you a definite time frame as to how long that process will take. What I can suggest is consulting with a foreclosure attorney in your area to help you negotiate a date certain to leave the premises, so that you have enough time to make arrangements to relocate. Click the "Find a Lawyer" link at the top of the page and you should be able to find someone experienced in your area. Good luck.

If the purchaser at the sheriff's sale is on the ball, they can typically get a deed recorded within 2-3 weeks (although that varies county to county and I don't know about Hudson). The purchaser can then get you out of the property 3-4 weeks after the deed is recorded. If the purchaser is not aggressive, these timeframes can be extended. Also, filing for bankruptcy can extend these deadlines. Also, some purchasers will consider leasing the property back to you, either on a short-term basis or a long-term basis. If you want to pursue this, you can contact them directly, or hire an attorney to do so for you. Good luck!
